The three major ethnic hair types that are generally recognized are African, Asian and Caucasian.
The ethnic differences in hair characteristics are slight when viewed in the broader context of human hair versus hair from other species. The ethnic differences can, however, be important aesthetic considerations in hair transplantation. Harvesting of black, curly hair from a donor site for hair transplants requires a slightly modified technique. In whites, the scalp hair generally grows straight. In people of African ancestry, both the follicles and hairs have a degree of curvature in relation to the scalp that must be accommodated in the harvest of donor hair. East Asians have thicker individual hairs than Caucasians, but fewer hairs per square centimeter of scalp. However, the thickness of East Asian hair follicles gives an impression of greater hair density. In hair transplant surgery, a larger donor area must be harvested in the East Asian to obtain the number of hairs needed for transplant.
